Chinese Music Teachers’ Perceptions of Context Issues and Transmission Modes in World Music Teaching

Based on his academic background in multicultural music education and ethnomusicology, Huib Schippers developed the Seven-Continuum Transmission Model (SCTM) 2004 to describe teaching situations of world music. The current study adopted SCTM as a framework investigate Chinese teachers’ perceptions context issues (tradition, authenticity, context) transmission modes (analytic/holistic, notation based/aural, tangible/intangible) teaching. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted using qualitative methodology with nine primary secondary school teachers from different provinces China. This found that more inclined formal, institutional settings rather than informal, often community-based process. In addition, also influenced by “Eurocentrism” values; however, their less affected ethnomusicology interprets human cultural perspective education.
